I. wielonki, that is, me: Martyna Skowro\u0144ska<\/p>\n\n\n\n

wielonki is a one-person knitting project \u2013 I not only design each product but also craft my ideas by hand. I don\u2019t outsource production to knitting or sewing workshops, and I don\u2019t use dropshipping \u2013 every piece is created between my own two hands, either in my studio or while traveling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before I found peace in yarn and made myself at home in the world of knitting \u2013 full of colorful skeins, knitting needles and crochet hooks of various sizes, and notebooks filled with sketches of ideas \u2013 I had traveled quite a long journey as an industrial design student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gda\u0144sk. During that fascinating period, I managed to create, together with my friend Ma\u0142gorzata Byli\u0144ska, the winning concept for a green office of the future<\/a> in a competition organized by Skanska and infuture hatalska, together with three students from Gda\u0144sk University of Technology, I took first place in the Open Minds workshop with a concept for a toy for the blind, in my\u00a0master's degree<\/a> I considered the technical possibilities and ethical implications of using animal-derived material such as casein. At the time, I also heard countless times: \u201cDone is better than perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I started making other things \u2013 and I became most absorbed in working with fibers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2021-2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n

after defending my master\u2019s thesis in design, driven by curiosity and passion, I spent some time studying art history and Polish philology, while taking on smaller commissions on the side. Toward the end of 2021, thanks to inspiration and support from my beloved Grandma Halinka<\/a> I create wielonki \u2013 I'll sell the first balaklavas<\/a>in November, and in early December, I choose a name that will stay with me for years to come. Even then, the combination of red and pink \u2013 one of my signature traits \u2013 already appears in my visual identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few months later, in October 2022, I registered the domain wielonki.pl and, with my husband\u2019s* help, created the first version of my online store. I\u2019ve been knitting more and more, and now I\u2019m adding bonnets<\/a>to the shop, I'm starting to explore the possibilities of crochet, but I also find time for reading and drawing\u2014including characters wearing my crocheted creations (see the bottom of the page ;)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing holds a special place in my heart, and from the very beginning I\u2019ve been looking for ways to combine it with wielonki. Back in 2022, I organized my first collaborations with graphic designers \u2013 these collaborations are still very important to me today, and every now and then I try to set up new ones! The first artists to draw for wielonki were Karolina Hayduchyk (@studio.hajka<\/a>) and\u00a0Jagoda Jankowska (@blueberry.kingdom<\/a>). The first year of wielonki concludes with a photography collaboration with Dominika Wi\u015bniewska (@wisniewska.fotografia<\/a>). Photos from this shoot appeared in Vigour Magazine\u00a0\u2665<\/p>\n\n\n\n

* while Rafa\u0142 is working on his PHD, he\u2019ll symbolically accompany me on this grand adventure in the coming years and support me (along with our kitten, Kreska) during the biggest challenges \u2013 like building a giant table for the studio<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first half of 2023 brings improvements for me and my growing number of customers: I bought a special lamp for product photography; I\u2019m redesigning the online store; and I\u2019m refining the appearance and contents of product packages, as well as the descriptions and care instructions for wool and cotton knitwear. New products are gradually being added to the lineup: crocheted items hats<\/a>, headsarfs<\/a> as well as smaller accessories and knitted beanies<\/a>. I still find time to create my own drawings and postcards, even though the busy and pivotal second half of the year is slowly approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October 2023, inspired by the crocheted figurines that my mother is creating<\/a>, I'm starting to knit hats, beanies, purses, scarves, and hoods from the blurred series<\/a>, which are quickly gaining popularity. A lot is changing right now: in December 2023, wielonki will celebrate its second anniversary, and for the past few months, they has become my full-time (or rather, multifull-time) work and a registered business. My products are now available at several concept stores in Poland, including Blask Store in Warsaw, Mi\u0142o\u015b\u0107 Studio in \u0141\u00f3d\u017a, and Good Good in Wroc\u0142aw. I\u2019m organizing new collaborations with graphic designers: with Natalia Konca (@namazane<\/a>) and with Joann\u0105 Wojni\u0142ko (@joannawojnilko<\/a>). I'm expanding my studio with new tools: a knitting machine, a manual linker for knitted fabrics, software for designing knitted fabrics, and accessories for dyeing and winding yarn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

2024-2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, new products will be introduced: blurred bonnet<\/a>, Halinka headscarf<\/a>, new drawstring balaklavas<\/a>, prototype crocheted tops. At the end of winter, I made my first scrunchie BEZY<\/a> \u2013 over the next few months, I create more and more color variations, and BEZY slowly become one of my best-selling products. As wielonki, I take part in more collaborations with photographers: Helena Bromboszcz (@helenabromboszcz<\/a>), Ada Zalewska (@ada.zalewska<\/a>), Luiza Gardziel (@luizagardziel<\/a>), Feed Me Lab (@feedmelab<\/a>). Toward the end of the year, Rafa\u0142 and I translated the store's website into English, and I began shipping to EU countries. I managed to set up the system gift cards<\/a>before Christmas 2024, on which I placed graphics by Joanna Wojni\u0142ko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year 2025 was extremely busy in terms of finishing orders, but I\u2019m still developing new products. I\u2019m creating new versions of existing products, as well as completely new ones, like BEBE headscarfs<\/a>, which, along with BEZA, have become part of my ongoing collaboration with the wasalaa brand. In the second half of the year, I begin creating limited-edition crocheted headscarfs that are particularly important to me; I\u2019m constantly striving to expand this collection, which is inspired by the traditions of Polish knitting. In my free time, I return to drawing \u2013 though it often ends up with me sketching out new ideas for wielonki. And there are more and more of them \u2013 year after year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Because it\u2019s an excellent way to combat overproduction and fast fashion; buying from a small artisan means: first, direct support for an individual who makes things by hand, rather than a corporation that minimizes production costs at every turn; second, a conscious, individual choice to prioritize quality over quantity; waiting a few to a dozen or so days is simply the smarter choice!

<\/p>what does this mean:<\/x> once in a thousand knitting projects, when I\u2019m finished, I\u2019m left with a few centimeters of leftover yarn in my hand, which I weave into the piece; in most other cases, there are a few, a dozen, or several dozen meters of yarn left over; In addition, yarns come not only in different colors but also in different dye lots \u2013 meaning batches of dye \u2013 and a skein purchased later may differ in shade from an earlier one; so, with the ever-increasing number of skein ends, I\u2019ve started making colorful products in the \u201coffcuts\u201d category, because even when making custom-order items, it\u2019s possible to minimize waste even further!

<\/p>what does this mean:<\/x> as you can see in \u201chistory of wielonki,\u201d every new product is a milestone and an important event for me; fast fashion encourages us to constantly update our wardrobes, constantly abandoning some trends in favor of others; this often comes at the cost of buying lower-quality products: cheaper ones, made from inferior materials, that wear out faster; That\u2019s why I\u2019m interested in simple, timeless cuts and materials that people have been using to make clothes for thousands of years \u2013 materials that have now been technologically refined and can serve their owners for many, many years to come
